Każdy ma jakieś pasje i cele, dotyczące tej czy innej sfery życia, dzięki czemu potrafi się zmotywować do działania, aby je osiągnąć. Od kilku lat marzy mi się umiejętność płynnego posługiwania się przynajmniej trzema językami – w sumie, angielski mogę uznać za pierwszy z nich. Jest to język, którego uczę się już kilkanaście lat, a w tym roku obronię (mam nadzieję) licencjat z filologii angielskiej. I to właśnie studia jeszcze bardziej utwierdziły mnie w przekonaniu, że wiedzę na temat danego języka i zasób słownictwa trzeba nieustannie poszerzać.
Everyone has passions and goals concerning this or any other sphere of life, so that he/she can be motivated to work to achieve them. For several years, I dream of the ability of being fluent in at least three languages – all in all, the English can be considered as the first one. It’s a language that I’ve been learning for a dozen years, and this year I’m going to defend (I hope) BA in English. And my time at the university confirmed my belief that knowledge of the language and vocabulary need to be constantly expanded.
Bardzo entuzjastycznie podeszłam do sprawdzenia, jaki jest kurs SuperMemo „Olive Green”, tym bardziej, że bazuje on na filmie. Jak dla mnie samo to połączenie wydaje się być genialne – nauka języka i oglądanie filmu, czyli połączenie moich dwóch ulubionych czynności. Jak to wygląda od strony technicznej i praktycznej?
I was very enthusiastic to check what’s the course SuperMemo „Olive Green”, the more that it’s based on the film. As for me, just this combination appears to be brilliant – language learning and watching a movie, so a combination of two of my favorite activities. How does it look from the technical and practical point of view?

ują się: płyta z filmem i kursem, 3 książki, kod aktywacyjny. Mówiąc krótko, rzeczy niezbędne do nauki i uruchomienia programu na komputerze. Przed rozpoczęciem kursu, należy go zainstalować na komputerze i uruchomić, założyć konto (do tego będzie potrzebne połączenie z internetem), a następnie przepisać kod aktywacyjny z pakietu. Naprawdę nic trudnego – instalacja dzieje się niemalże samoczynnie, a założenie konta zajmuje zaledwie 1-2 minuty (zależy jak szybko przepisze się kod). Utworzenie konta pozwala nam na darmowe (przez 6 miesięcy) korzystanie z usługi SuperMemo Cloud, które daje możliwość kontynuowania nauki na smartfonie/tablecie. Książki zawierają dialogi z filmu, słownictwo oraz gramatykę.

Really easy – installation happens almost automatically, and setting up an account takes only 1-2 minutes (depending on how quickly you can prescribe a code). Creating an account allows us to free (for 6 months) use of the service SuperMemo Cloud, which gives the opportunity to continue learning on the smartphone / tablet. Books contain dialogues from the movie, vocabulary and grammar.
Jak takie „lekcje” przebiegają w praktyce? Olive Green to film sensacyjny podzielony na 60 scen –każdy poziom zaawansowania to 12 scen, oraz na 3 poziomy zaawansowania: A1-A2, B1-B2, C1. Najpierw należy obejrzeć scenę (można to zrobić kilkakrotnie, aby utrwalić słownictwo lub ponownie dokonać decyzji w interaktywnej części nagrania) z napisami (polskimi/angielskimi), które pomagają w zrozumieniu treści. Po części filmowej czas na naukę. W książce można przeczytać dialog ponownie, poznać słownictwo, które pojawiło się w danej scenie, a także gramatykę. Po tej części należy wrócić do multimedialnej części kursu, gdzie znajdują się ćwiczenia pomagające w nauce, utrwalaniu słówek i wyrażeń.
How do such „lessons” look in practice? Olive Green is a thriller divided into 60 scenes – each level of advancement consist of 12 scenes; and into 3 levels: A1-A2, B1-B2, C1. You must first see the scene (you can do this several times to consolidate vocabulary and once again make decisions in an interactive part of the scene) with subtitles (Polish / English) that help in understanding the content. After the film part, it’s time to study. In the book you can read the dialogue again, learn vocabulary, which appeared in the scene, as well as grammar. After this section, return to the multimedia part of the course, where there are exercises to help with learning, perpetuating words and expressions.
Pierwsze sceny dla mnie nie były w ogóle wymagające, ale ja oglądam filmy, seriale po angielsku bardzo często bez jakichkolwiek napisów, więc to była dla mnie rozgrzewka. Poziom zaawansowania C1 był bardzo fajną powtórką słownictwa i wyrażeń, jednak wydaje mi się, że mój poziom zaawansowania pozwolił mi przede wszystkim na dostrzeżenie szczegółów technicznych, czy merytorycznych tego kursu.
The first scenes for me weren’t at all demanding, but I watch movies, TV series in English very often without any subtitles, so it was a warm-up for me. Level C1 was a very nice repetition of vocabulary and expressions, but it seems to me that my level of advancement, primarly, let me to notice the technical details or substantive of this course.
Ogromnym plusem jest to, że poziom trudności rzeczywiście rośnie ze stopniem zaawansowania. Pierwsze dialogi składają się z krótkich zdań o bardzo prostej budowie, kwestie są wypowiadane wyraźnie i w tempie, który ułatwia zrozumienie słuchanego tekstu. Dialogi na poziomie B1-B2 są trochę trudniejsze, a na C1 są stworzone z dłuższych zdań, slangu, czy trudniejszych wyrażeń. Drugą rzeczą, która jest jak najbardziej na plus, są akcenty. W filmie można usłyszeć akcent amerykański, angielski (ten bardziej formalny, jak i ten „uliczny”), rosyjski, dzięki czemu jest się przygotowywanym do zrozumienia wypowiedzi po angielsku, nie tylko tych, z którymi mamy do czynienia na nagraniach w szkole (perfekcyjna wymowa, akcentowanie słów i fraz). Fajne jest też to, że podczas powtarzania SuperMemo planuje nam powtórki z wiadomości przyswojonych podczas oglądania sceny.
A huge plus is that the difficulty level actually increases with the degree of advancement. The first dialogues are composed of short sentences with a very simple structure, sentences are spoken clearly and at a pace that makes it easier to understand the listening text. The dialogue at the level of B1-B2 is a little more difficult, and C1 is made with longer sentences, slang or difficult phrases. The second thing that is a big advantage, there are accents. In the film, you can hear an American, English (the more formal, and the „street”), Russian accent, so it prepare to understand speech in English, not just those with which we’ve dealt while listening to recordings in the school (perfect pronunciation, stressing words and phrases). The fact that SuperMemo plans the repetition of the things that we learned while watching the scene is also cool.
Jedyne do czego mogę się przyczepić to fabuła i choreografia walki… Momentami wybory bohaterów mogą się wydawać naiwne, a walka mogłaby być nieco dopracowana. Z drugiej strony, lepiej, że twórcy skupili się na dialogach, gramatyce i całej części merytorycznej, bo to jest najważniejsze!
The only thing I can complain a little about is the plot and fight scenes choreography… Sometimes choices of the characters may seem naive, and the fight could be a bit elaborated. On the other hand, it’s better that the creators have focused on dialogues, grammar and all parts of the merits, because it’s the most important!
Podsumowując, jak dla mnie, taki rodzaj samodzielnej nauki języka jest świetnym rozwiązaniem nie tylko dla filmoholików. Połączenie rozrywki, interaktywnej fabuły, zaangażowania oraz systemu powtórek daje szansę na nauczenie się języka angielskiego. Na pewno, zarekomenduję to osobom, które będą chciały się uczyć same. Mnie pozostaje czekać i mieć nadzieję, że powstaną kursy na bazie filmu języków, których chciałabym się nauczyć.
To sum up, for me, this kind of self-study is a great option not only for filmlovers/filmaholics. The combination of entertainment, interactive story, involvement and a system of repetition gives you a chance to learn English. For sure, I will recommend it to those who will want to learn by themselves. I still wait and hope that there will be courses on the basis of the film of the languages that I would like to learn.
